Squidoo Slap!!

NewsFlash!: SQUIDOO SLAP!!! EDGE / SET MEMBERS STAND BY FOR DETAILS OF THIS BREAKING STORY!

The lab has been investigating the recent drop in ranking for Squidoo lenses in Google’s search engine results. It appears that as of the 7th of July nearly all Squidoo lenses have dropped in ranking in the Google search engines. There is a lot of speculation in various forums at present (including Squidoo’s own SquidU forum) but the reasons are uncertain.

At this stage, the lab feels there are 3 potential causes.

1. Recent Squidoo changes have resulted in Google indexing Squidoo lenses in a different way that is resulting in lower ranking scores compared to before.

2. Google are applying a virtual penalty on the Squidoo domain for reasons known only to them.

3. Google is undergoing a re-indexing process that is resulting in unusual SERP rankings which will re-assert themselves after the re-indexing has completed.

The lab currently favours the penalty cause because websites now ranking above previously high ranking Squidoo lenses have much fewer backlinks and lower page rank than the Squidoo lenses they have replaced.

Dan and I will be conducting a Skype conference within the next 24 hours to brainstorm this developing issue. The call will be recorded and made available to all SET and Immediate Edge members within a day. Obviously if any remedial action can be undertaken we will let people know as soon as possible.

Ed

  1. Thanks Ed: As always, glad to get your twitter post. Came right over to see what you had to say.

Then wrote a little note of my own on the subject.

If you get a moment, let me know what you think:
    Squidoo Slap…or just a tickle

Thanks for sharing this information. Looking forward to your update!

  2. It could be the smackdown they’ve taken regarding spam of late. as here:
    http://www.calacanis.com/2007/07/07/more-on-squidoo-spam-and-hubpages-doing-a-good-job/

  3. That was a great call tonight mate and just wanted to say… you do get some great Twitter lovin’

    Dan

  4. You know, Google aren’t stupid. It’s only natural that they would penalise any tool for generating artificial rankings, this happened with blogs and its happening with squidoo.

I can also guarantee you that this isn’t the only change they’ve implemented to address this.

Has Matt Cutts posted anything on this topic?

  5. Hi All,

Well I am one for rampant speculation here (an Ed’ism) but Seth pretty much shot himself in the foot by pimping the fact that Squidoo was responsible for sooo much traffic to eBay Stores that Google (after their embarrassing retreat) had to take action and slap him… (Well come on… serious loss of AdWords revenue)

True, don’t get me wrong, there has been a lot of really crappy lenses created recently, and that is not what Squidoo is about, but using Squidoo as a marketing tool is not a bad thing… It is all about responsible marketing…

Anyway, Ed and I are currently working on this years Thirty Day Challenge which is Web 2.0 based, and Squidoo does factor in. It is a shame that Google has taken this sudden and drastic action… but as always, they are the omnipotent overlords with a ‘No Do Evil’ plan…

  6. What is a “SET”

Also, if Squidoo is penalized would the web sites feeding the RSS Modules also be penalized?

Coul that be possible. Would it be better NOT to have links in Squidoo from our websites/blogs?

  7. Sorry I think I left my comment about the Squidoo slap in the wrong post…

  8. Looks like the Slap happens in July.Last two years it was the Google Slap now it Squidoos turn to take a hit.Is Web 2.0 cutting into Googles profits? Will
social bookmarking sites go down the drain? Where
will the Traffic come from to get to your Site? Will
SEO take the next hit from Google? Only Time will
tell! Stay Tuned as we hear ED and Dan say “OUCH that Hurt”! LOL

Really I know Ed and Dan will come up with something
that will work.I still think Content is King.
The Squidoo Slap will not keep the 30 Day Challenge from beening the Best ever.

  9. I like to think all this was caused by my own timely post on 26th June - http://www.netmonetization.com/2007/06/squidoo-bucks-or-squidoo-sucks.html - which was generally received with great indifference by the masses of the great unwashed, but which did provoke a comment from Seth Godin himself (which was nice of him) - shortly thereafter Google did what Google does and Seth Godin acknowledged that there was a problem !

  10. Hey Ed -
Thank you again for covering the interview with Seth Godin on the “Squidoo Slap”

the full 5 pages are here:

    http://www.searchingdot.com/2007/07/17/interview-with-seth-godin-on-the-squidoo-slap/

  11. I think that it was only a matter of time before squidoo got slapped. There are far too many pages with similar or identical content on the same topic.

However, I still think that squidoo is an excellent platform for people to share their knowledge about a particular topic and make a few bucks while doing it.

I hope that the steps squidoo is taking to clean things up are sufficient and that google would once again share the love with squidoo.

  12. Based on the timing, I’d say Google’s AdSense customers are unhappy with Squidoo’s new “contextual” Ads, which until recent changes at Google would have been a clear violation of the AdSense Terms of Service. Google has laid off Squidoo for a long time, presumably because they publish so many AdSense impressions.

  13. I am just starting to learn squiddo. But now I read this article and I am now confused. Is there a problem with squidoo?

  14. Bummer that I never saw an answer to the question, “Should we stil use squidoo to link to our sites”. Does it cause a drop in the ranking of a page it links too, now today, Sept 29th 2007.

Google is pretty arrogant for the crappy results they provide. BTW, if they err on the side of adsense sales they shoot themselves in the foot long term because it’s a sustomer based business and the customers are going to go where the best results are provided.

Alta Vista and Excite used to do as well at providing relevant results as google does. If I wanted to go to a links list of links lists I’d have searched for it.

Kinda like the old adult circle jerk revisited in non adult. From adult links list to adult links list with nothing but links and adds on it and the links just lead to more of the same kind of pages.

So, do we use squidoo or not.

  15. I realized that my squidoo blogs were extremly high placed within the rankings and had more hits than ever. I was going to use that kind of advertising to help get a profitable website off the ground but now it’s going to be more costly. Thanks for the incite tubbynerd.com

  16. They’ll get back up. Google is always messing with their ranking system and switching it back.

  17. Is it worth bothering with squidoo at the moment or at all? I’ve made lenses and they are getting zero traffic, last year it was a different story, make a lens get a few links and get some decent traffic. I’m going to link to my home brew beer lens from this post as an experiment and see what happens

  24. It was bad enough when the Goggle slap of July hit, but it was nothing compared to the second Google slap that hit in October. My lenes went from 100 - 200 hits per day in September, to 1 - 2 hits per WEEK in October!

Google was not the only search engine to slap Squidoo in October. Several of the smaller search engines banned Squidoo from their search results and places like Tecnorati and PingGoat removed all the Squidoo lenses off their indexs.

Why? The places that have given a reason said because Squidoo was a breeding ground for spammers. As a long time member of Squidoo I got to agree. In the past few month spammers have hit Squidoo, and hit it hard.

on a slightly differant note, while I’m speaking on the evils of spamming idiots, I must point out, that you really should do something about moderating your blog comments. All these spam post comments on this post alone, really go far to drop your accuracy reputation as a reliable blog poster.

  29. Lawrence Licaros says:

Has anyone out there heard about WideCircles.com. It seems like a way better service then wasting money on PPC. Apparently they are using refering websites ( forums, blogs, wiki, etc. ) and have a viral word of mouth distributed approach to it. My friend told me he got around 100 visits from single post which cost him $0.40c. I am going to give them a try today . In case you are intrested here is it. http://widecircles.com?s=imt1

Did anyone out there give a try to Wide Circles or WideCircles. They are new word of mouth advertising platform, apparently they can push massive amount of messages through social network mediums like forums, blogs, wiki’s and so on. They say that they only bill for posts active for minimum of 5 days and price seems pretty affordable. I am going to give Wide Circles aka WideCircles a try since I am tired of PPC fraud. http://widecircles.com

  31. I am glad to post my views and points in this blog, but I must say that webmaster of this blog has done a very great job to make his blog more informative and more discussable but unfortunately everything is same here that more than 80% in this and other blogs post their comments for making spam!!!, so i will really all this spam links to google band tool, because webmaster makes blogs for making discuss and for sloving each other problems. thanks

  34. I couldn’t understand some parts of this article, but it sounds interesting…

  35. OK, so you’re looking for alternatives to surgical breast augmentation. You really want to enhance and/or enlarge your breasts out of dissatisfaction, feelings of inadequacy, or hey -maybe you just want to fill your clothes or your pretty bras out more alluringly! You, like many women are asking the question “do breast enhancement pills really work?” Larger breasts seem to the elusive object of desire for so many these days, especially with increasing numbers of women getting surgical breast augmentation, it’s almost become a status quo.

But you are not looking for the round, unmoving, and sometimes very artificial look of breast implants. It used to be if you were in this boat, you were really just relegated to living with the breasts you had, and learning to like them. Well, now, with the advent of modern science and nutraceutical technology, there are some very viable and effective alternatives to surgical breast augmentation. So, that brings us to that same question, do breast enhancement pills really work?

  43. I don’t think Squidoo has ever really recovered from the slap. Google still seems to find and rank Squidoo lenses very quickly but they also seem to slip out of the rankings just as quickly. It takes a bit of work to get them ranking well again.
